Football – Bank Of Valletta first division: No goals in Cottonera derby

Malta Independent Monday, 5 March 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Senglea and Vittoriosa produced no goals and very few thrills to end their derby 0-0 and earn a point a-piece. It was a fair result in a very low profile derby which only came to life in the second part of the second half when Vittoriosa produced more than their opponents and could have even grabbed the three points if they were sharper in front of Attard.

In the first half this derby failed to produce any actions in front of goal, with both defences having the better over the attacks. Vittoriosa were more aggressive than their opponents but were never really dangerous.

Their only chances came in the last part of the first half when an Anywanna header sailed over the bar, and Senglea goalkeeper George Attard had to charge out of position to block a Scerri incursion.

Just before the break Vittoriosa appealed for a penalty when Privitelli was brought down by Lawrence Attard, but their appeals were turned down by referee Attard.

On their part Senglea lacked punch up front with Chima Dozie completely subdued, and Darren Grech never in the heart of the action, Dennis Fenech’s boys never really tested goalkeeper Cassar.

The second half was more promising. Senglea introduced Jeremy Gatt and Silvio Sciberras and had their best chance on 58 minutes when Timothy Thomas was put through by Sciberras but his shot from an ideal position was blocked by Cassar. On the other end it was Trevor Thomas who tried his luck for the Stars but his effort was blocked by Attard.

Darren Grech was inspiring in the 67th minute when he dribbled past a couple of defenders before shooting inches wide.

Ten minutes from time Senglea had another good scoring opportunity when Darren Grech passed to Dozie whose shot was deflected by goalkeeper Cassar with the ball finishing against the side netting. On the change of ends Trevor Thomas was put through by Zammit but his close range effort was well blocked by Attard.

Goalkeeper Attard was again instrumental when he dived to save another close range shot by Scerri following a good Anywanna run.

In the last minutes Vittoriosa should have easily snatched a dramatic winner with substitute Ivan Zammit missing a glorious chance with an open goal at his mercy. The same Zammit tried to make amends two minutes later when he intelligently put through Scerri on the right but the hard working Vittoriosa midfielder shot weakly and Attard saved his side with his final save of the morning.
