Life Through a lens

Malta Independent Tuesday, 6 March 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

On Wednesday at 8pm, there will be a screening of the Soviet film The Man with a Movie Camera, one of the masterpieces of early Russian silent cinema, in the courtyard of the Manoel Theatre.

This film is part of the “Silents are Golden” series, being organised by the Manoel Theatre and St James Cavalier. This playful film is at once a documentary of a day during the existence of the Soviet Union, a documentary of the filming of the said documentary, and a depiction of an audience watching the film. Even the editing of the film is documented.

We often see the cameraman who is purportedly making the film, but we rarely, if ever, see any of the footage he seems to be in the act of shooting! The film represents Soviet cinema’s avant-garde in its last and most brilliant phase. DJ Owen Jay will be creating a soundscape to this unusual film. For more information, you can contact the Manoel Theatre booking office by phoning on 2124-6389 or by sending an email to [email protected].
