Pre-budget Document in June

Malta Independent Tuesday, 6 March 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 18 years ago

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi yesterday said he was hopeful that this year’s pre-budget document would be completed at an earlier date – by the end of June.

Dr Gonzi was speaking during the first meeting with the new executive council of the Chamber of Small and Medium Enterprises (GRTU) at its newly-furnished offices in Valletta.

He pointed out that the GRTU’s role was essential to small businesses.

“The government hears the voice of small businesses through the GRTU – and it is only then that we take a decision,” he said.

He added that the association brought together people from different sectors which were usually in competition with each other.

“We listen to everyone and try to take the best decision in everyone’s interest – always keeping in mind the common good,” said Dr Gonzi.

The Prime Minister also pointed out that certain budget decisions were based on recommendations made by the GRTU.

“These decisions were intentioned to strengthen and stimulate economic activity for small businesses,” he said.

The pre-budget consultation was initiated early this year, following last year’s positive experience, said Dr Gonzi. He encouraged all associations, organisations and the public to send in their ideas and suggestions.

“While we might not put into practice each and every suggestion, we still will listen to what you have to say,” said Dr Gonzi.

He also spoke about the importance of refining economic discussion within the local context.

“It is only in this way that we can give an economic boost to each locality – and this is where the GRTU comes in,” said Dr Gonzi.

GRTU president Paul Abela said the association was carrying out more studies based on its members’ needs.

“We are also holding extensive consultative meetings with the government and the EU to keep them informed about our members’ needs,” said Mr Abela.

The GRTU president said that more focus was needed on localities.

GRTU director general Vince Farrugia pointed out that the GRTU was not only a transmission belt of complaints but also made proposals.
