Special Needs school project sponsored

Malta Independent Sunday, 11 March 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 18 years ago

The HSBC Cares for Children Fund will contribute Lm3,000 towards an Inclusive Education Project at Maria Assumpta Girls Secondary School in Hamrun.

This project has now entered its third year and this new sponsorship will allow the project to be extended for a further three years. This is the second time that HCCF is sponsoring this project – an initial Lm3,000 was donated to the school three years ago.

Inclusive education at Maria Assumpta caters for the individual educational requirements of a number of students with special needs. These requirements sometimes also extend to their families. The project fosters an inclusive ethos within the school through meetings with teachers and other students.

Training is also provided for facilitators in the implementation and evaluation of inclusive education projects by carrying out self assessments, developing research skills and techniques related to the inclusion of students with individual educational needs and the dissemination of information on services and benefits available for people with disabilities and their families.

HCCF’s extension of its sponsorship will enable the school to continue the coordination of this project and to build on what has already been achieved, while maintaining the support of all school staff.
