Woman Lawyer, man questioned with regards to slain Russian woman

Malta Independent Sunday, 11 March 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Although differing on minor details, various usually well-informed sources reported yesterday that now that the name of the woman found murdered at sea has become known, the police are making considerable inroads in their investigations.

Maltastar.com reported last night that a woman lawyer and a man are being questioned in connection with the murder. The woman lawyer had the murdered woman among her clients and is not considered to be a prime suspect.

The man is a middle-aged man and his relationship to the woman is yet uncertain.

On the other hand, Net News said the Police are holding three persons for interrogations in connection with the case.

The Police also confirmed the woman’s identity who was a regular visitor to Malta. However, the Police cannot make known the woman’s name. The case is being considered as a highly sensitive one, with the Maltese Police cooperating with the Russian embassy.

The woman was found with a black plastic bag covering her head. However it is unclear whether she was asphyxiated by the bag or whether the plastic bag was placed over her head after she was murdered.

An autopsy carried out on the woman’s body soon after she was retrieved showed that she bore strangulation marks around her neck and bruises to her face.

Other sources, according to Maltastar.com said that the woman could have been involved in prostitution and thus the police are also working on the thesis that she could have been murdered by a “client”.

Assistant Commissioner Manuel Cassar and Inspector Chris Pullicino from the homicide squad, Inspector Daniel Zammit from the Criminal Investigations Department and Inspector Louise Calleja from the Vice-Squad are investigating.
