WasteServ Malta Ltd refers to the article EC starts legal action against Malta (TMID, 23 March) in connection with the Waste Landfill Directive and would like to reaffirm that it is putting in place the necessary systems and procedures to avoid the negative effects that such a facility was having on the surrounding communities.

With the development of this facility and through the bring-in sites and the civic amenity sites, WasteServ has continued to promote the recovery and recycling of waste which have all been received positively by the general public.

WasteServ started to use the engineered landfills just prior to Malta’s entrance into the EU in 2004, meeting the obligations of the Landfill Directive. The upgrade of the Sant Antnin recycling facility, with a total projected investment of over e20 million, will also help to reduce the amount of biodegradable waste from the landfill as required by the Landfill Directive.

Finally, WasteServ reaffirms that all of its land filling operations are according to permit conditions as required by regulations issued by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority.
