Shoe-box Baby’s mother named, holds baby for the first time

Malta Independent Sunday, 8 April 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Yesterday evening, Labour website maltastar.com gave what they claimed is the name of the 19-year-old woman from Cospicua who a week ago today gave birth to a baby boy later abandoned in a shoe-box in a Cospicua alley.

The mother’s name, maltastar.com and KullHadd journalists Kurt Farrugia and Owen Galea wrote, is Karen. They described her as a brown-haired chubby girl wearing a grey jogging suit who they met as she sat quietly on the doorstep of her home in St Michael’s Street probably waiting for the police.

While the journalists were talking to the young mother, three women went up to her and asked: “Karen can we have a chat?”

The women were police inspectors from the vice squad and a court expert who had come to Cospicua to continue their investigations.

It seems that during the hour-long chat with the police, the mother said she would like to see her child. Her wish was granted a couple of hours later when Karen was seen leaving her home to go visit her baby.

Earlier last week, Karen was not allowed to see her baby when, on her own initative, she walked into St Luke’s Hospital and, without revealing her identity, asked to see the baby. After her request was denied by the nurses, she told them that she was the baby’s mother. Nonetheless, the authorities decided not to let her see her child, in the best interest of the baby.
