Malta Independent Wednesday, 11 April 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

A 32-year-old man from Qormi was yesterday fined Lm500 after he admitted threatening police officers and filing a false report with the police.

Twanny Mifsud pleaded guilty, before magistrate Giovanni Grixti, to threatening police officers at Hamrun police station at around 1pm on 9 April.

Mifsud also admitted disobeying police orders, breaching the public peace and using vulgar language in public.

Furthermore, he was found guilty of driving under the influence of alcohol on 8 April after 10pm in Pieta and Hamrun and refusing to take a breathalyser test at police head-

quarters at 11pm.

He pleaded guilty to filing a false police report, offending police officers and possessing ammunition without a licence.

Prosecuting inspector Mario Tonna explained that Mifsud had taken antibiotics and was under the influence of alcohol when the incidents took place.

He added that Mifsud had told him that he had been beaten up by police officers while he was at Hamrun police

station.

However, said Insp. Tonna, after Mifsud was taken to St Luke’s for a medical examination and no injuries were found, Mifsud admitted that he had exaggerated.

Defence lawyer Robert Abela said that Mifsud apologised for all his actions.

Following Mifsud’s guilty plea, magistrate Grixti fined Mifsud Lm500 and ordered the confiscation of the ammunition. Furthermore, the magistrate ordered Mifsud not to approach the police officers involved in the incidents, against a Lm100 fine in default.

Police inspector Mario Tonna prosecuted and Dr Robert Abela appeared for Mifsud.
