Low Cost airline subsidies

Malta Independent Sunday, 22 April 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Your report on the 12 April conference on low-fair airlines entitled Government has just four weeks to decide on further low cost routes (TMIS, 15 April) gives only one side of the story.

A casual reader unacquainted with the issue would get the impression that Ryanair is striving to add more routes to Malta, but is being capriciously held back by the Maltese government.

As an independent newspaper, you should try to report the whole story. In fact, another newspaper also reported that Tourism Minister Francis Zammit Dimech said: “Ryanair is free to start operating from Rome and Heathrow as of this evening if it so wishes, but it has to abide by the normal terms. Don’t... ask me for money. If we are going to be offering subsidies, then we should at least have the right to choose the under-served destinations.”

This highlights the fact that the Maltese taxpayer is subsidising each and every Ryanair passenger.
