Xghajra T-Qrendi 0-0

This was a balanced match which deservedly ended in the sharing of the spoils with Qrendi showing their best moments during the first-half with Xghajra gaining the upper-hand after the break. Qrendi did the attacking throughout the first period and after only five minutes a free-kick by Kurt Grima went inches wide of the far post.

On 19 minutes a shot by Joe Mercieca was saved by Keith Galea and the Xghajra keeper was again in action six minutes later as he brought off a fine save to stop a Tano Farrugia free-kick.

Qrendi continued to press forward and just before the interval Richard Galea concluded from a Sam Vella corner-kick and Jovil Abela blocked on the goal line.

Three minutes after the restart Qrendi went close through Karl Agius but from then onwards Xghajra dictated the run of play and Qrendi’s goalkeeper Keith Camilleri did well to save off attempts by Neil Attard and Alex Azzopardi.

A minute from time Xghajra were again denied by Camilleri off a close-range shot by Neil Attard.

Fgura Utd-Sirens 0-0

This was a pleasant match which could have gone either way as both goalkeepers brought off various difficult saves throughout the ninety minutes. Everything remained uncertain in the promotion race.During the first period both sets of defenders dominated the proceedings.

After ten minutes the Fgura striker Clint Ellul was denied by the Sirens’ custodian Glen Buttigieg and at the other end the Fgura goalkeeper saved off a Kenneth Zammit free-kick.

On 28 minutes Fgura were denied by Buttigieg off an Eric Lia free-kick and four minutes before the break Sirens created their best opportunity with Kenneth Zammit hitting just high over the bar from a difficult position.

The second part of the game was much better with both teams doing their utmost to win the match. Fgura were denied by Buttigieg on two occasions off attempts by Clint Ellul and Aldo Pace with Sirens responding through Kristian Galea and Mark Camilleri whose shots were excellently saved by Ranier Farrugia.

Late in the match Sirens could have gained the three points but somehow they were kept out by the Fgura custodian.

Luqa SA-Zurrieq

Zurrieq notched their 11th win of the season after beating Luqa St Andrews in a very difficult match.

Zurrieq continue with their challenge for promotion honours. Zurrieq showed the better football throughout the first forty-five minutes and they deservedly took the lead in the 23rd minute. A free-kick by Matthew Genuis was fumbled by the Luqa keeper and Robert Bajada took advantage as he shot home from close-range.

On the half-hour Zurrieq hit the post through another Genuis free-kick with Luqa gradually sharing the exchanges and in the fina; stages of the first-half they created two clear opportunities through Randolph Penza and Chris Penza whose efforts just missed the target. Eight minutes into the second-half Luqa’s midfield player Adrian Psaila was sent off for a professional foul on Clayton Gatt and three minutes later Zurrieq lost Robert Bajada who also shown the red card after he was booked for a second time.

Luqa hit the upright in the 75th minute through a low shot by Alessandro Pirrone and they were again unlucky in the 83rd minute as the crossbar denied them off a conclusion by Emanuel Cumbo.

St Lucia-Attard 1-6

Attard completely dominated their opponents Santa Lucia in a match which they dictated for long stretches. The Saints are now risking joining Ta’ Xbiex in having to re-apply to retain their Third Division status next season. Attard were all over the Saints during the first forty-five minutes with Andrew Agius giving them the lead in the 4th minute.

On 12 minutes Attard made it 2-0 with Luke Borg crossing for Fabian Cutajar to head home and three minutes later a drive by Elon Cassar bounced off the crossbar. In the 30th minute a Daniel Agius move led to Fabian Cutajar’s second goal but nine minutes later Chris Curmi scored a consolation goal for the Saints.

Five minutes before the break Attard scored a fourth goal through Mark Saliba following a personal effort and on the stroke of half-time a shot by Josef Axisa was cleared off the line by Luke Portelli.

Zejtun C-Gharghur 0-6

This is a deserved win for Gharghur who managed to beat Zejtun Corinthians by a handsome margin with their striker

Lawrence Vella obtaining a personal hat-trick. Zejtun were very weak at the back. Gharghur dictated the run of play during the first period with Wayne Mallia giving them the lead after only two minutes.

Zejtun came back through Andy Portelli who shot wide infront of goal and on another occasion Godwin Mifsud headed onto the crossbar from a cross by Elton Caruana.
