Malta Independent Thursday, 26 April 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 18 years ago

With four matches remaining till the end of the hockey league the battle for second place is almost concluded with The Hunters Tower YS having the edge over Qormi Poiatti. Following their victory over BDO Hs two weeks ago (3-1 with goals from Chris Bonello, Waylan Abdilla and Luke Busuttil Leaver with a neat touch for The Hunters Tower and Dylan Lentini for BDO), The Hunters Tower were not in action this weekend but were interested spectators as Qormi Poiatti took on Ta’ Soldi Rabat.

Any thoughts that Rabat may have pulled up the brakes were dispelled on Sunday as they fought back from a goal behind at half time with two goals in the second half that saw them retain their 100% record in the League. Keith Calleja gave a half time lead to the greens but Ta’ Soldi came back in the second half with goals from Branko Radojevic and Jeffrey Aquilina.

In the second game of the day, in a game not short of goals and a fair amount of controversy, BDO Hs picked up their first three points of the season and leapfrogged over their opponents, Britannia Tours WH, out of the bottom place. The game ended 3-2 with BDO Hs taking the lead on the stroke of half-time through Michael Caruana Smith. Britannia Tours came back with goals from the inspirational Borg Costanzi and evergreen Bianchi but Lentini and Bartolo gave all three points to BDO.

With The Hunters Tower YS enjoying a five point advantage over Poiatti Qormi, the final games of the League will be played in the space of three days with the contenders for second place both having to play twice. Poiatti Qormi face Britannia Tours WH on Sunday and BDO Hs on Tuesday the 1st of May. The Hunters Tower YS take on Ta’ Soldi Rabat on Sunday and the face Britannia Tours WH on Tuesday. Faith would have have it that the two teams have been drawn against each other in the Preliminary Round of the KO!
