Sailing: Gewiss Marzamemi Weekend Regatta 2007

Malta Independent Sunday, 29 April 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

This year’s edition of the GEWISS Marzamemi weekend regatta shot off to an early blistering start with a record 41 boats in both cruising and racing divisions plying Marsamxett Harbour under starters’ orders.

The stiff breeze, an easterly blowing at 12 to 14 knots, provided ample fuel for the cruisers to set off on the 8.30 start at a strong and steady pace just ahead of the racers. The racers shot off 15 minutes later, providing yet another spectacle of hull and sail jostling for position to sail off on a starboard tack from the start line. This resulted in a few individual recalls which no doubt frustrated crews and skippers alike, however the race is a reasonably long passage to the southernmost tip of Sicily, which means that it’s not over at the start. In the wind available, with a steady helm and careful trimming, this year’s race is set to be an interesting one.

Etienne Bonello DuPuis, managing director of Hydrolectric Limited said that Gewiss SPA, an Italian electrical manufacturing company, has chosen to sponsor this sailing event because the sport itself and the boats amply reflect the philosophies and products of the Italian company which are known to be the epitome of technical perfection, style, elegance and durability. Gewiss products are available from Hydrolectric Limited of Hamrun.
