Football – Bank Of Valletta Premier League: Giglio may return to Valletta or join Marsaxlokk

Malta Independent Saturday, 5 May 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Sliema midfielder Stefan Giglio could return to his first love Valletta in the summer, but may even opt to join new champions Marsaxlokk instead.

With Valletta confirming the arrival of former Marsaxlokk president Victor Sciriha in their administration – he is expected to be the club’s next president – it is obvious that the City team is bound to be strengthened, and rumours are rife that Giglio has been made a prime target.

The champions, however, are also thought to be looking forward to strengthening their team with the possibility that some of their players could well be leaving the club.

In fact, goalie Haber and the two international strikers Daniel Bogdanovic and Andre Schembri are expected to play football abroad next season. Coach Brian Talbot, who has already been confirmed by the club, is now eyeing some other players as substitutes and Giglio is one of a few players earmarked to join the champions next season. Another is striker Andrew Cohen of Hibernians.

A club which is expected to have a torrid time during the summer transfer market is Birkirkara. After this disastrous season, the Stripes are expected to reshuffle and they have already started moving with the arrival of coach John Buttigieg after the resignation of Stephen Azzopardi.

Their main task is to keep most of the players whose contracts are expiring at the end of this season.

Three, perhaps four, of their top players are also thought to be considering a move away. These are defenders William Camenzuli and Kenneth Scicluna and striker Etienne Barbara. George Mallia could also be a Sliema target, if Giglio decides to move elsewhere.
