Sirens-Luqa SA 2-1

Clyde Grech proved to be Sirens’ hero in their very important win against Luqa St Andrews. This result means that the St Paul’s Bay team clinched promotion to the Second Division together with Third Division Champions Mgarr United.

After only four minutes Sirens were given a scare as Luqa were very close to taking the lead through Chris Farrugia.

Sirens came back as a shot by Gareth Magri and a header by Etienne Bonnici were well saved by John Agius.

On 15 minutes Sirens wasted a clear opportunity through Mark Sciberras who shot straight into the Luqa keeper from close range but they deservedly managed to break the deadlock in the 24th minute as a Mark Sciberras pass found Clyde Grech unmarked and the Sirens’ midfielder shot in past Agius.

In the 29th minute Clyde Grech increased Sirens’ lead with a long-range shot and three minutes later an Adrian Galea goal was annulled for an infringement on an opposing player.

Early on in the second period Sirens were close through Adrian Galea whose header went inches wide but gradually Luqa gained the initiative and they pulled a goal back on 62 minutes through Randolph Penza.

Luqa were then denied by Buttigieg off an Oliver Cutajar free-kick with Sirens being denied in added time as Agius brought off a fine save off a shot by Patrick Barbara.

Zurrieq-St Lucia 1-0

Zurrieq notched their 12th win of the season to finish in third place behind promoted Mgarr United and Sirens.

Zurrieq will now strive to win promotion as they take part in the Play-Offs. On the other hand St Lucia, together with Ta’ Xbiex, will have to apply to maintain their Third Division status next season.

After just three minutes the Saints were denied by Cachia who saved off a shot by Matthew Genuis. On other occasions Zurrieq went close through Carmelo Farrugia and Daniel Zammit and in the 29th minute Godfrey Chetcuti shot wide in front of an open goal.

Five minutes before the end of the first half the Saints’ keeper failed to hold on to a shot by Genuis and Godfrey Chetcuti was on hand to shoot home from close-range.

The Saints’ reaction produced a dangerous attempt by Chris Cutajar and in the 55th minute they gained a penalty for a foul on Anthony Brignone. Brignone’s shot from the spot was well saved by Julian Azzopardi.

Late in the match Zurrieq could have sealed the issue but efforts by Carmelo Farrugia and Joe Bugeja went inches wide of the near post.
