Malta Independent Monday, 14 May 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The Provincial Prior and the Augustinian Community in Valletta are presenting an organ recital by John Aquilina, organist at Mdina Cathedral, on Friday 18 May at 7.30pm at St Augustine’s Church, Old Bakery Street, Valletta. The concert will last approximately one hour and entrance is free.

Aquilina will perform major organ works by European composers and an organ work by Maltese composer, Fr Alberto Borg OSA.

The programme includes the Concerto in A minor BWV 593 by Johann Sebastian Bach, a Fugue by Fr Alberto Borg OSA, the Suite Gothique Op. 25 by Leon Boellmann, the Piece Heroique by Cesar Franck, the sixth organ Sonata in D minor Op. 65 by Felix Mendelssohn and the famous Toccata by Charles Marie Widor.

Aquilina is one of Malta’s generation of young organists. A self-taught musician, he has been organist at St Nicholas’ church, Siggiewi and at St Andrew’s Scots church, Valletta. Since 2001 he has been organist and choirmaster at Mdina Cathedral, where he performs on Sundays and feast days. He has also given a number of solo concerts in Malta.

Aquilina will play the Mascioni organ in St Augustine’s Church. The organ has two manuals and a pedal board with 20 speaking stops.
