Another season is archived with this 2006/2007 campaign going down as a historic first championship win for Marsaxlokk in Maltese football.

Marsaxlokk's season was truly a memorable one. They showed consistency of champions throughout, winning 18 out of an impressive unbeaten run of 21 matches on the trot, stretching from the first to the third round and were only beaten three times this season.

They produced the tight marking and workrate in a resilient defence that had seen them concede only 28 goals all season. Their strong creative midfield gave a powerhouse display, providing excellent service to the strikers. And the striking partnership of Bogdanovic and Schembri, who between them scored 42 league goals, always proved troublesome to all opposing defences.

Above all, they were masterminded by a shrewd tactician like Brian Talbot, described by the club as their most precious asset this season.

Yesterday's was a polished display against a depleted Sliema side who dropped as many as seven regulars from their starting line-up.

Encouraged by their blowing concerto of colourful fans, Marsaxlokk had more of the attacking play, but the game was 26 minutes old when the goal deadlock was broken. Pullicino, starting the match instead of the suspended Sammut, played the ball wide to Bogdanovic on the right. The latter's cross from near the byeline was well met by Cleaven Frendo who beat keeper Bonello with a well hit volley.

That goal pushed Marsaxlokk forward. Towards the half hour Bonello stretched himself to keep out Pace's powerful drive from outside the area and the young keeper did well to block Schembri on the loose ball.

The champions crafted numerous crosses inside their opponents' area which, at times, embarrassed the Wanderers' rearguard.

Sliema's tame reply came from a Mattocks' grounder which was turned into a corner by keeper Gauci as Anonam and Nwoko both looked peripheral figures in the Wanderers' attack.

The second half belonged entirely to Marsaxlokk. Not surprisingly, they doubled their lead three minutes after the break. Frendo played a square pass to the unmarked Jamie Pace, who had all the time in the world to beat Bonello with a low strike.

On 69 minutes Frendo played a long ball from inside his own half to Bogdanovic, who passed it to Andre Schembri to beat keeper Bonello with an exquisite shot.

And on 77 minutes Daniel Bogdanovic finished off Schembri's pass to add to his personal tally of 31 league goals, claiming the season's top scorer award.

Sliema, who were rarely inside the Marsaxlokk area in the second half, scored a consolation goal with two minutes remaining, when Chucks Nwoko headed in Carabott's sailing free-kick from the left. But by then the Wanderers had long surrendered to competent, efficient and occasionally imperious opponents, as the day belonged to the new champions.

Champagne flowed and fireworks cracked as skipper Carlo Mamo was presented with the BOV champions trophy by MFA president Joe Mifsud, kick starting night-long celebrations in the south of Malta's fishing village.
