Crackers: Take Care of your body

Malta Independent Thursday, 31 May 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 18 years ago

If you are like a lot of other children, you probably spend a lot of time sitting at the computer, doing schoolwork or playing games. But whether you are typing a report for school or just surfing on the internet, using the computer can affect different parts of your body, like your hands, wrists, back and eyes. You’ll want to keep these parts as healthy as possible now so you would not suffer any pains in the future.

Sitting Square in Your Chair

Unfortunately for children, most computer systems are designed for a 25-year-old man’s body – a body that is a lot bigger than yours! That can make it hard for you to get comfortable. But luckily, there are some things you can do to feel more comfortable and protect your body at the same time.

One of the most important things you should do at the computer, is to sit square in your chair. This means keeping your body straight when you are sitting, with your behind in the centre of the seat. Your legs should come out straight with your knees bent, and your feet should be flat on the floor directly in front of you. If your feet do not reach the floor, use a footrest, or ask if you can stack some thick books under your feet.

Your back should be touching the seat back the whole time – no slouching or leaning over the keyboard while you type. And if you can use a seat that has a support for your lower back, that is even better.

Typing Time

And speaking of typing: you do not need to hit those keys very hard to type. A light touch will do the job. While you are typing, make sure your fingers do not have to reach too far; if they do, try moving the keyboard closer to you. Your wrists and elbows should be at a 90-degree angle to the upper part of your arms. Try to keep your fingers and wrists level with your forearms (the lower part of the arm is the forearm) while you type – holding your wrists or fingers up or down while you type could make them hurt later. If it is hard to remember to keep your wrists in the right place, a wrist rest can help. These go in front of the keyboard, and you can find them at computer stores.

Taking care of your body while at the computer means you will feel better – and be able to work and play better.
