Conditionally Discharged for misappropriating Treasury cheques

Malta Independent Saturday, 2 June 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 18 years ago

A woman has been conditionally discharged for three years after being found guilty of issuing a number of Treasury cheques in her name and in names of members of her family and cashing them when she was not entitled to the money.

Noemi Camilleri, 27, from Nadur, was charged with misappropriating more than Lm500, when she issued the cheques to which she was entitled. Camilleri, who at the time worked with the Treasury Department, was also found guilty of forging signatures and falsifying public documents.

The court heard that the cheques in question were issued in her name as well as in the names of her father Angelo Camilleri, her aunt Clementina Spiteri and Joe Grima.

The court heard that since then, the accused paid back all the money she misappropriated.

Magistrate Miriam Hayman conditionally discharged her for three years and also ordered a general and perpetual interdiction.

Police Inspector Joseph Cordina prosecuted.
