Tonio Mallia’s Exhibition opens

Malta Independent Sunday, 3 June 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The vernissage of Battle of Angels Tonio Mallia’s solo exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts was opened recently by curator Dennis Vella amidst a considerable number of artists and other friends of Tonio’s.

In the artist’s own words: “My latest exhibition is a continuation in the Classical vein with more of a Symbolist touch. Symbolism as a movement that appeared towards the middle of the 19th century and some thirty years later expired in the throes of the First World War. These works evolve around the beliefs of the Catholic faith and more importantly centre on angels as beings that think freely and feel joy and sorrow as we do. This led me to contemplate on the pain of deprivation from God and the fulfillment of His closeness. In these works I hav attempted to convey such eotions which are timeless and after all mirror our own.”

Battle of Angels remains open until 18 June during the following hours: daily between 9 and 5pm. The artist may be contacted on Tel: 7931 1343 or [email protected].
