Students Donate money for the environment

Malta Independent Tuesday, 5 June 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

St Joseph Junior School in Sliema have made a generous donation to Nature Trust (Malta) to help in the conservation of the natural environment of the Maltese islands.

The school held an EkoFest on Friday in which all the pupils took part. Various performances were presented, all having a strong environmental message on subjects such as waste recycling, biodiversity and its importance and vandalism.

The school organised the event as part of its EkoSkola activities. It is actively participating in this international programme run by Nature Trust (Malta), on behalf of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) – an international organisation responsible for the certification of Green Flags for Schools, Green Keys for Hotels and Blue Flags for seas and beaches.

During the event, head of school Sr Cecilia Mary Casolani presented the sum of Lm202 to Nature Trust (Malta) president Vincent Attard, to be used in environmental projects, and the amount of Lm70 to Sliema mayor Ms Arrigo.

The money was collected among the pupils, with the support of their parents.

Mr Attard thanked the school for their support for the natural environment. He said that the money would go towards new trees or the replacement of others, such as those vandalised at the Foresta 2000 and Dwejra sites (two areas that have suffered vandalism on trees in the past few weeks). Mr Attard encouraged all the other schools

participating in Ekoskola to follow this example and support the natural environment.
