Despite some defeats, there was a lot of satisfaction in the judo camp here in Monaco yesterday as the new team presented in these Games started off with a gold medal and a bronze medal.
The honour of the first gold in these Games went to Joanna Camilleri who won the -57kg category. The bronze medal was won by Brent Law who managed to reach the semi-finals of the -60kg competition.
A little bit of luck helped Joanna to the gold as her opponent, Augsburger of Liechtenstein, was forced to withdraw after an injury.
It was a surprise win for Joanna who now looks forward to a successful career, having only just started the sport about a year ago.
For Brent Law, it was another success, even if his medal was bronze. He had lost his match in the first round, but returned into contention after winning a bout in the repechage.
