WSC Rebuts claims on water quality

Malta Independent Wednesday, 27 June 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 18 years ago

The Water Services Corpora-tion has strongly denied the claims made by Labour MP Joe Mizzi, in his article entitled Water Crisis that appeared in The Times yesterday.

Mr Mizzi claimed that consumers were being supplied with tap water that has dangerous levels of chromium, cyanide and bromide.

He also claimed that, in order to conform with EU standards, dangerous groundwater was “swiftly certified by local entities as being fit for drinking” and that this information has been “hushed up”.

The corporation said it would like to put the public’s mind at rest by saying that these claims are completely unfounded. It said that the water is safe and in complete conformity with EU and local health standards.

“The 54,000 tests the WSC carries out on around 5,000 samples per annum show that our drinking water is perfectly safe to drink,” the WSC said. “Those interested may access from our website www.wsc.com.mt our annual reports containing detailed results of the above tests.”

The corporation said that, in the circumstances, it is seeking advice as to what legal action can be taken regarding Mr Mizzi’s article.
