Pro-life Indeed

Malta Independent Sunday, 5 August 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

From Mr A. Micallef

I read Marcel Dingli’s letter entitled “Pro Life” with great interest (TMIS, 29 July). Mr Dingli claims that the only real pro-life party in Malta is the newly established Azzjoni Nazzjonali. It seems Mr Dingli is suffering from a huge memory loss and has completely forgotten Malta’s recent political history.

Ever since its inception the Nationalist Party has always been pro-life. In opposition and in government the PN has never once shifted its position and has always been pro-life. It has consistently argued against anything that goes against the culture of life or seeks to promote the culture of death. The Nationalist Party has been, consistently, against abortion legislation and has gone beyond mere words by always making sure that Malta is not coaxed in any way into introducing any form of abortion.

Has Azzjoni Nazzjonali ever done anything tangible? Has Azzjoni Nazzjonali ever replied to criticism from abroad for believing in life? In Latin we say, “facta non verba”, and while the PN has done both, Azzjoni Nazzjonali has only done the latter. In all fairness it is also worth pointing out to Mr Dingli that the Malta Labour Party both in opposition and in government has also consistently supported a pro-life stand and the MLP remains committed to the culture of life.

Mr Dingli may feel as proud as he wants that he’s a member of Azzjoni Nazzjonali; in a democracy everyone has a right to his own view but he should be careful to get his facts straight.

Angelo Micallef
