I’m sure that the recent news reported on the dumping of dead dogs at the Sant’ Antnin recycling plant came as quite a shock to the many animal lovers in Malta. Not that we don’t know what goes on behind the doors of the SPCA, although there are those who try hard to block the sad memories from their minds, but for the poor dogs to end that way is just heartless.

We are not expecting dogs to be given a full-scale burial service, but ultimately they are the innocent victims of a tragic situation in which they have been placed.

No dog wants to end up homeless, wandering the streets of Malta and Gozo or more so at the SPCA, waiting for his imminent end.

Besides, it seems that this practice at the SPCA has been going on regularly, which means how many lovely dogs are being massacred daily just because there is no room for them anymore? It is utterly sickening.

It is the human race that has placed dogs in this miserable situation where they are abandoned, and ultimately they end up paying the price for the carelessness of man. When will we ever learn that mankind is no more superior to any other animal inhabiting this world of ours, which is already overpopulated with too many people but not enough human beings. And in the meantime, the authorities on these blessed Catholic islands of ours just sit back on their laurels and ad nauseum throw to us occasional plans, or rather smokescreens, regarding their so-called interest in the welfare of animals (sic)!

When will they ever have the guts to really set something in motion and not just give us the lip service that we have been hearing for years? Alas, this is another lament of a sad heart and an appeal that will once again fall on deaf ears.
