Animal Welfare and One News

Malta Independent Saturday, 11 August 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

I completely disassociate myself from the way One News chose to mention me and use my correspondence, Let animal “carcasses” become animal “remains” (TMID, 7 August) in order to try and get political mileage, in its bulletin on Tuesday 7 August.

I always believe that on subjects related to the environment and especially the well-being of animals, one should be apolitical.

At the end of the day, no political party in Malta has ever demonstrated any particular interest in animal welfare. And that, I believe, is still the situation – with regard to both parties.

In the past, I took the Malta Labour Party to task for politicising another issue – that of hunting and trapping in Malta. In a letter that appeared under my name, I had expressed my belief that the stand that was taken by the party, as well as the way that it was reporting and treating the issue, was a vote-grabbing one.

I also took the MLP to task over the fact that it gave an extremely weak and dubious stand on what it would do in relation to animal welfare in Malta, in a document about the environment, if and when in government.

I look forward to One News giving us details as to what the Malta Labour Party plans to do with regard to animal welfare if and when it reaches the government benches.

So, I feel that it was a very serious error to use my name in order to “enrich” the story with regard to animal carcasses at Sant’ Antin.

One News, like any other political channel, would do well to leave people of goodwill alone and not use them for cheap, senseless, political propaganda. Unlike some people, I have absolutely no time for cheap, local politics.

Now, I wonder if One News will refer to this letter in the same tone as they did with the first one!
