The Birzebbuga Water polo pitch project

Malta Independent Sunday, 19 August 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

I refer to S. Bonnici’s letter titled “Birzebbuga Aquatic Sports Club” (TMIS, 5 August). Ms Bonnici tries to sweep all the flaws in the “sainted” Birzebbuga water polo pitch project under the carpet and attacks “summer residents” for trying to disrupt it.

First of all, I am a year-round resident so I do hope that I qualify to express an opinion, at least in Ms Bonnici’s eyes. Secondly, I sincerely hope that the currently dilapidated water polo pitch is once more redeveloped into something worthwhile that will do Birzebbuga proud. Right now, the pitch is an open-air urinal and not a sight for sore eyes. I am sure that most residents, summer or year round, and not just those living in front of it, have the same wish.

However, I personally cannot understand the need to build a kiosk at street level to cater for the water polo club situated on the level below. Can Ms Bonnici help me out and indicate at least the Planning Application number that included the kiosk in its plans? Or was the kiosk included later after a “suggestion” by MEPA? Is MEPA taking over our seafront now by suggesting that we build kiosks here and there?

If there is a need for such a kiosk, let it be built at pool level where there is ample space – in this way it will also be more accessible to our future water polo players.
