Solidarity With the people of Burma

Malta Independent Sunday, 7 October 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 18 years ago

Moviment Graffitti joined civil society around the world yesterday to observe International Day of Action in Solidarity with the Burmese People with a peaceful protest in front of the Chinese Embassy in Malta.

Moviment Graffitti states, “What is happening in Burma should be of concern to all of us. In recent days several Buddhist monks took to the streets to protest against the economic and political situation in this country. In a short time hundreds of thousands of Burmese people joined the Buddhist monks in their protest.

“This was done in a context of a military regime that has ruled the country for the last 18 years. During all this time the Burmese people had to endure a brutal administration that demonstrates a total disregard for fundamental human rights.

“The most blatant example of such abuse is that of Aung an Su Kyi, the leader of the political party National League for Democracy, who has been kept under house arrest for most of the past 17 years after elections won by her party in 1990 were cancelled.”
