Golf: BOV Sponsors Malta vs The Rest competition

Malta Independent Thursday, 18 October 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Bank of Valletta is supporting ‘Malta vs The Rest’, one of the top highlights of the year by the Royal Malta Golf Club.

This competition brings together the eight top ranked Maltese and foreign golfers with the addition of four wild cards picked by the captain of each team. This tournament is being held over three days between tomorrow and Sunday.

This year is the 34th edition of the competition that has been held every year since 1973. Malta has won the competition 17 times, the Rest 13 while on three occasions the match was halved. The prize is a rather beautiful Wilkinson Sword which was presented to the Royal Malta Golf Club by the British Residents Association in 1973.

The fact that Malta has won the last five encounters will not lower the competitive spirit as The Rest are eager to achieve victory and this will lead to a tense competition. The results of the competition are announced immediately after the final day.

The Bank’s sponsorship was presented by Victor Denaro, Chief Officer Information Techonology to Alex Mangion, Malta’s Captain in the presence of Guy Chamberlain and Ray Mountford from The Rest

“Bank of Valletta recognises the importance of sports in the overall development of the Community in which it operates” said Mr Denaro. “Through our sponsorship, we are actively supporting Golf and helping to raise the profile of this sport in our country”

“We invite the public to participate in this event by cheering on the two teams” said Mr Mangion. “Members of the Royal Malta Golf Club will be delighted to explain the rules and regulations of the game and we guarantee three days of heightened atmosphere during the competition”
