Malta Independent Tuesday, 23 October 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 18 years ago

Anton Tabone, Speaker of the House of Representatives, has had a meeting at his Chambers with Sergio Piazzi, Secretary General of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean.

Mr Tabone and Dr Piazzi discussed the ongoing preparations for the official opening of the Secretariat of the Parliamentary Assembly at Spinola Palace, which is scheduled to be inaugurated by President Edward Fenech Adami on 22 November. The meeting also focused on the holding of the second session of the Parliamentary Assembly to be held in Malta in November.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, with its seat at Spinola Palace in St Julian’s, was set up in Nafplion, Greece, in 2005 on the initiative of the Maltese parliamentary delegation to the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean will bring together, for the first time, all the national parliaments on the Mediterranean littoral.

The assembly, which held its inaugural session in Amman, Jordan in September 2006, will serve as a forum for political and economic cooperation, as well as dialogue between cultures, civilisations and religions.
