Tango Jazz With Teatro Greco Dance Company at Teatru Manoel

Malta Independent Monday, 19 November 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

On 24 and 25 November the Manoel Theatre and the Italian Cultural Institute present a dance performance by Teatro Greco Dance Company from Rome, returning to the Manoel after more than 20 years. Tango Jazz is choreographed by Renato Greco and Maria Teresa to classical music, Piazzolla’s rhythms and Neapolitan Songs, promising an unforgettable evening.

Tango Jazz explores two of the most evocative dance forms available. The tango itself is a sensual metaphor for life, full of passion and Latin flavour, jazz, on the other hand, is an exaltation of music and dance in its purest form. This blend of two moving and inspiring genres of music has been created by the extraordinary ability of three talented musicians: Giovanna Famulari (voice & cello),

Massimo De Lorenzi (guitar) and Rodolfo Lamorgese (percussion).Their experiences and influences have given birth to this new project. The programme ranges from tango to classical themes, from ethnic sounds to renowned jazz songs, creating a mesmerising fusion.

The dancers - Franco Favaro, Elena Franchi, Matteo Faieta, Vincenza Brini, Claudio Di Stazio and Armanda Di Stazio - interpret this flow of rhythms with the versatile technique characteristic of this company. The choreography becomes a liaison between the refined jazz style and the elemental nature of the passionate Argentinean dance. The dancers move smoothly from solos, to duets and ensembles, each time throwing new light on the music. The tension between the two makes way for an exhilarating experience.

Teatro Greco was established in 1970. The company integrates different dance-styles to modernise the classic repertoire and create accessible and exciting productions. The company has travelled worldwide, including several visits to Malta in the 1980s.
