AN Proposing new ‘elegant’ Sliema waterfront

Malta Independent Sunday, 2 December 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Azzjoni Nazzjonali (AN) Deputy Leader Angelo Xuereb presented a set of proposals yesterday that promise to renovate the Sliema Waterfront at a press conference.

Mr Xuereb said AN believes that the commercial centre should remain based around The Strand, Bisazza Street and Tower Road, and not be directed to Tigne’ Point.

“We believe that each change in the development of the Sliema zone is crucial, which is why it is important discussions are held between the stakeholders and the Sliema residents,” he said.

Mr Xuereb proposed connecting the two harbours with an underground tunnel that would connect and encourage activity in the three major commercial zones – Sliema, Valletta and Cottonera.

“Through this link we can introduce ferries that are more appropriate for this type of service, like the ones in European cities known as river boats. These could be used by both Maltese and tourists,” he said.

“Furthermore,” he added, “we will be giving a boost to the service of the small traditional Maltese boats known as dghajsa tal-pass.”

The deputy leader suggested building a waterfront in Sliema that would establish it as the “most elegant waterfront in the Mediterranean”.

This waterfront would include 1,016 parking bays, two berths for super yachts, 110 berths for standard yachts, four-lane main road, eight berths for harbour and leisure cruises and a major water feature in the sea among others.
