New Science book in Maltese

Malta Independent Sunday, 2 December 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Making kaleidoscopes, balloon rockets, shadow puppets... for the first time ever, children can follow simple step-by-step instructions on conducting 100 science experiments in Maltese. There is much talk about how the Maltese language can be applied not only to everyday subjects but also to the more technical aspects of the curriculum. To prove this, Merlin Library has just published Esperimenti tax-Xjenza – a full-colour, hardback book containing 100 science experiments in Maltese.

The book covers all areas of science, from brainteasers to experimenting with gravity and magnetism, using inexpensive everyday materials children may find even at home. Concern for safety is paramount, and the proper use of materials is always explained. In the process, children learn basic scientific facts such as why the sky is blue, how planes stay in the sky, what the concepts behind gravity and shadows are, and much more.

The science experiments have been adapted into Maltese by Clare Azzopardi and Miriam Teuma. Published by Merlin and produced in collaboration with leading UK publisher Usborne, the book comes with links to an online site – specially vetted in content for children's access – that takes the experiments further, provides all sorts of information and downloads, and suggests further experiments.

Esperimenti tax-Xjenza was launched at the Malta Book Fair, and a number of events were held on the Merlin stand incorporating experiments from this new book.

This new science book is available from all bookshops in Malta and Gozo, and further information is available from [email protected]
