Advice To Dr Michael Axiaq

Malta Independent Sunday, 2 December 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

From Mr P. A. Attard

Dr Michael Axiaq seems to have a big, big problem. As far as I know, he is a medical doctor, Member of Parliament, Christian, moreover a Catholic Christian, member of Opus Dei (horror of horrors), an eternal student of bioethics and chairman of the Bioethics Committee of the House (correct me if I’m wrong).

He seems to be deeply interested in the beginning of human life, has some definite opinion about abortion, and does not mind at all expressing himself regularly, publicly and clearly.

I strongly believe – in fact, I would advise him in no uncertain manner – that in order to have a real impact on public opinion he needs to turn his qualities and beliefs upside down and possibly burn his qualifications, declare himself an unbeliever, raise doubt on anything spiritual or religious and… become a newspaper columnist, an opinion maker.

Thus he would automatically be able to assume the right to freedom of thought and expression, possibly to the exclusion of others, and be in a favourable position to speak and write about anything as well as pontificate (excuse the religious connotation) with intelligence, power and authority on practically everything under the sun, including, of course, the beginning of life and abortion.
