Marsovin Wine dedicated to former chairman

Malta Independent Sunday, 30 December 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

On 3 December, Marsovin launched the first ever passito to be produced in Malta from Maltese Shiraz grapes. The wine, Guze is dedicated to Marsovin's former chairman Joseph Cassar, affectionately known as Sur Guzi.

The event was held at the Notre Dame Gate, Vittoriosa, also known as Bieb is-Sultan. A variety of distinguished guests were invited, notably the President Dr Edward Fenech Adami to honour the commemoration of Mr Cassar who passed away on 13 December 1992 at 65 years of age. This event marks the 15th year since his demise.

Guze is a complex sweet red wine produced from carefully handpicked shiraz grapes from selected vineyards in Malta. The grapes must be in a perfect condition at harvest as the production of this type of wine requires that the individual bunches of grapes are very carefully laid down in a well ventilated and humidity controlled environment for a period of four to six weeks until the grapes become partially raisined and concentrated to about half their original weight before being pressed and vinified into wine. The wine is then allowed to age and mature in French oak barrels for eight to 12 months. The production of this wine is limited, only 4,100 bottles have been produced, in 50cl bottles.
