Confused? And How!

Malta Independent Monday, 31 December 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 17 years ago

Empty vessels make most sound and that is why Ms Valerie Borg (TMID, 20 December) begged the editor of this newspaper enough space to try and make some noise. Honesty, I believe that this Labour councillor is confused; otherwise she would have not written what she did. Where on earth did she read in my letter (TMID, 10 December) that the Labour Party is a non-entity?

Maybe Ms Borg assumed that I stated that Labour is a non-entity for the following reasons: In 1947 Sir Paul Boffa was the first Labour Party Prime Minister and guess what; his government found it tough at the helm and resigned within two years. Then came Dom Mintoff of the Malta Labour Party and he became Prime Minister in 1955 and as one might have guessed, his government did not even last three years. Then in the early 80s came Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici who hung on to power against the expressed wish of the overall majority of the electorate even though he did not master one single vote. The next Malta Labour Party Prime Minister was Alfred Sant and his government lasted less than two years.

By the way, Dom Mintoff was also the Prime Minister between 1971 and 1983. But then Ms Borg admits that Labour has skeletons in their closet and I am sure she was referring to those dark years. Her allegation that the Nationalist Party also has skeletons in the cupboard is totally unfounded. Like a true socialist, Ms Borg persists in repeating untruths. How does she come to the conclusion that the Nationalists managed to manipulate the Church?

Obviously her grandmother and mother led her to believe fiction. Fact: Guze Ellul Mercer died in 1961 and the Nationalist Party came to government in 1962. So her insinuation that it was a Nationalist Government that buried him in unconsecrated land is a misconception. Confused she really must be. Labour’s conflict with the Church was self-inflicted and had nothing to do with the Nationalist Party.

She contradicts herself by first stating that she will not reply again to my letters but then she implies that she will let me know in six months time what we had to suffer because of the euro. Who knows, in six months you might have converted to the Nationalist Party. You would have had six months of plenty more euros in your pocket. I will buy you lunch, three days after the election results are out. Hopefully you will accept celebrating with me another Nationalist electoral victory.
