Favouring Children

Malta Independent Tuesday, 1 January 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 17 years ago

What you wrote in your editorial Favouring children (TMID, 19 December) makes sense, especially the part when you openly stated that some teachers prefer some children over others.

What you said is true. Yes, some children are the blue-eyed boys and girls of their teachers, and possibly of the head-teachers too. They are the ones who always get the main parts in the school play, irrespective of their talents, get to be made class captains, irrespective of their leadership skills, and get to be given to do the so-called errands for the teacher.

It is highly unfair that such distinctions are made. Children have feelings too, and they notice that some of them are “preferred” while they are not. This tends to lead to the growth of rebellion inside these children. Who can blame them, if they are always left out by the so-called authorities.

Teachers should reflect on what you wrote. I suggest that you send copies of the editorial to all schools.
