New Year’s Resolution

Malta Independent Friday, 4 January 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 17 years ago

We have all made our New Year’s resolutions. Some will be achieved, others will not. Some have already fallen by the wayside.

I think that the country should make one big resolution – and I say this with obvious reference to politicians.

It is the year of the election, no doubt a difficult time for any country. But I believe that politicians should make it a point to debate issues, not people. Too often they have fallen into the trap of personal accusations and sometimes insults too. In my opinion, one should say “I do not agree with you because your idea is wrong”, rather than “You are stupid” or “You know nothing”.

There are different ways one can put things, and believe me, politicians stand to earn more points if their arguments do not include personal touches.
