Sundays With Heritage Malta – Fort St Angelo and Hagar Qim to be open to the public

Malta Independent Tuesday, 22 January 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Heritage Malta is again this year organising its popular Sundays with Heritage Malta activities. The first event for this year, on Sunday, 27 January, will focus on Vittoriosa and Qrendi, giving the public the opportunity to visit Fort St Angelo and Hagar Qim, which presently are not accessible to the public.

Hagar Qim, which is closed to the public because of work on the installation of a protective cover, will be open to the public from 9am to 5pm. There will also be guided tours in Fort St Angelo, parts of which recently were handed over to Heritage Malta.

The tours in Fort St Angelo will be held at 10 and 11am, and at 4pm in English, and at 2 and 3pm in Maltese. Participants are to meet in front of the Malta Maritime Museum 15 minutes before the start of the tour.

Heritage Malta will also be holding events and guided tours at the Malta Maritime Museum and the Inquisitor’s Palace in Vittoriosa.

The Malta Maritime Museum and the Inquisitor’s Palace will be open to the public from 9am to 5pm with guided tours in Maltese during the morning at the Maritime Museum and throughout the day at the Inquisitor’s Palace. Members of the Historical Re-enactment Group Malta (HRGM) will be performing a series of military and historical interpretations at the Malta Maritime Museum between 2:30 and 4:30pm.

The Gukulari ensemble will be performing at the Inquisitor’s Palace between 2 and 4pm. The Gukulari ensemble is a Maltese musical group that records music related to Malta ranging from formal dances of the Knights of St John to music of the Maltese town dwellers, lively airs of the humble folk, as well as ghana melodies. The musicians generally perform in elegant 18th century costumes.

A multi-site ticket for all the Vittoriosa events costs e7 (Lm3.01) for adults and senior citizens. Children under the age of 16 enter free of charge. The tickets can be bought at the Malta Maritime Museum or the Inquisitor’s Palace. Tickets for Hagar Qim can be bought on site at the reduced rate of e4.50 (Lm1.93) for adults, e2.25 (Lm0.97) for students and seniors and e1 (Lm0.43) for children.
