Alfred Sant Wants to re-open EU issue – PN

Malta Independent Thursday, 31 January 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 17 years ago

Accusing the MLP of offering nothing new, the Nationalist Party yesterday said Labour leader Alfred Sant wanted to re-open the EU issue, which would create uncertainty, as had happened in the 22 months Dr Sant was Prime Minister.

In his time as Prime Minister, it added, the wrong decisions were taken so that investment had dried up, there was no job creation and unemployment rose. Dr Sant had learned nothing from his mistakes.

His declaration on the programme Dissett on PBS, that he wanted to re-open the EU issue, showed that the Opposition Leader could not run a government of an EU member state. The MLP had not accepted Malta’s EU membership, so much so that in its “New Beginning” document it declared that it would have been better for Malta to have a different relationship with the EU, in the form of a partnership, the PN said.
