Dr Gonzi – The people’s leader

Malta Independent Sunday, 2 March 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

From Mr P. Aquilina

When assessing other people’s character one looks at the person’s upbringing. Our Prime Minister comes from one of the most respected families in Malta. He is a true leader and no one can criticise his conduct during all his years in public life.

Before entering politics Dr Gonzi was the president of an association of people in need and the handicapped. He was later appointed Speaker of the House where he distinguished himself by the serious manner in which he conducted the business of the House.

Dr Gonzi became the party’s General Secretary in 1996 and during his time Net TV started transmitting. He was later re-elected and was made Minister for Social Policy and later elected PN Deputy Leader after Prof. De Marco was appointed President of Malta. He was elected leader in 2004 and also Prime Minister after Dr Eddie Fenech Adami.

In the last four years, following Malta’s entry in the European Union, he strengthened the Maltese economy and Malta was accepted in the euro zone. His leadership is impeccable in every sense of the word and his achievements will be an important factor for the Maltese people to decide with their vote that Dr Gonzi and his government will govern our country for the next five years.

The PN under the leadership of Lawrence Gonzi has many more plans that will all contribute to a healthier Maltese economy, improved education and a better environment, The Nationalist Party after changing the face of Malta structurally, environmentally as well as economically should be rewarded with a general election victory on 8 March.

Labour were tried and failed

The Maltese had given the Labour leader and his party the chance to govern our country less than 10 years ago but they failed miserably. In just 22 months two Cabinet ministers resigned, among whom the respected ex Finance Minister Lino Spiteri (who a few years earlier was robbed of the Labour Party’s leadership) and Dr Charles Mangion, the present Deputy Leader. Labour’s political weapons are anonymous letters, arguments and acrimony between themselves.

Violence – Labour’s constant factor

In the last few days we had a taste of what is in store if the Labour Party is returned to power. People of my age remember that Dr Sant was already in the MLP leadership when the dogs of violence were unleashed some years back.

Let us not forget that at least two people who supported the PN were murdered under Labour, one of them at Police HQ itself and the other at the party’s club at Gudja.

That is Labour in government; we have the right to keep on mentioning these political atrocities

Labour also had the majority in 42 local councils in the last years. Over the last weeks I have highlighted the administration fiascos they made, their abuse of power, the lack of respect to the Local Councils Act especially the financial regulations, the favouritism they adopt when employing council staff.

Labour has proved that it will try and break anyone who is against its policies. They have repeatedly done it at local level. Labour will do worse at national level, either one is a yes man or he is banished

Sant gives Labour councils 0% marks

It seems that Dr Sant has realised how ridiculous he was when before every local council election he used to go around localities holding elections and start dishing out high marks for efficiency to Labour councils.

After three of the Labour councils - Hamrun, Cospicua and Ta’ Xbiex were declared the most inefficient councils in Malta and Gozo and after our pointing out weekly Labour councils’ abuses, Dr Sant must have decided to ignore his usual percentages and realised that Labour councils have failed their residents.

As Election Day gets nearer people must think profoundly and decide what is best for their families and above all our country. It is our obligation as parents and as Maltese.

Labour is incapable of governing at local level and even worse at national level. In the end the people’s decision is sovereign.
