Over the past years, GasanMamo Insurance Ltd has stepped up its drive towards implementing a wide-ranging CSR programme targeting an improved quality of life for the society in which it operates. From sponsorship to local cultural and sport programmes to environmental initiatives in its internal operations and incentives to the public for a greener world, GasanMamo has shown its ongoing commitment to the environment. The CSR Day celebrated yearly on 19 March will see a group of companies dedicating some of their free time for a better cause. GasanMamo Insurance will once again participate in this initiative by giving their assistance at Richmond Foundation’s home in Floriana. The Malta Independent met with Ramon Sultana, GasanMamo Insurance employee, who participated in last year’s CSR Day, to get his feedback on this day.
You took part in last year’s CSR Day. What jobs did you do and where were you stationed?
The job involved mainly painting of walls and garden furniture, pointing, gardening decorations and other improvement works. We were stationed at the Children’s Unit at Mount Carmel Hospital in Attard.
What kind of needs did the residents there have?
The needs are never ending, especially when the residents of the house are children. We did our utmost to improve the environment the children live in so as to make them feel better and also improve their quality of life.
How did you feel rolling up your sleeves for a good cause?
It gives a great sense of happiness in not just giving but doing. Rather than donate money, for which the Maltese public is well known for its generosity, the feeling of doing something and seeing a tangible result at the end of the day is of immense satisfaction.
In what way do you think companies can help support the vulnerable sectors of society?
Apart from supporting these members of society through their donations companies can encourage their respective employees to play a leading role in such activities by dedicating some of their free time in giving a helping hand. Furthermore employers could consider dedicating a selected number of hours from their employees’ normal working hours dedicated throughout the year in order to assist such causes.
How do you think the involvement in CSR activities affected you as an employee?
I feel that such activities improve my relations with my colleagues especially with those participating in the CSR activity. It creates a better bond with my colleagues and helps bring out the human element since this activity helps us meet in an informal environment with a very good cause as the ultimate goal.
What has been your overall experience of CSR Day?
I have been participating in the CSR activities since 2001. It gives me a lot of pride and satisfaction that I can contribute even in a small way. I hope that interest among GMI employees will keep on increasing resulting in more participation during CSR day. My general comment is that even though we end up exhausted after the CSR day it makes me happy to see that I have contributed to improve the environment and life of a less fortunate person.
