My Choice for deputy leader for party affairs

Malta Independent Sunday, 30 March 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

I was greatly disappointed when Dr Gavin Gulia was not elected to Parliament on 8 March. I can understand the reason why this happened, which has nothing to do with politics. I was even more shocked when I heard that Dr Gulia does not intend to contest the by-elections.

I heaved a very deep sigh of relief though, when I read that, after all, Dr Gulia is still very keen to remain in politics, and has decided to contest the deputy leadership for party affairs.

Dr Gulia has been one of the most popular Labour deputies, not only during the last legislature, but also as parliamentary secretary and minister in Dr Alfred Sant’s Labour government. His considerable charisma added to his well-known ability as an excellent debater and speaker and his readiness to help all those who seek his assistance and advice, coupled with his honesty, stand him in good stead as the ideal choice for the post of deputy leader for party affairs.

If Dr Gulia receives the support of the majority of Malta Labour Party delegates on 12 June, I believe that this would be of great benefit to the party, so that in five years’ time, together with the other two members of the Malta Labour Party leadership, the new party leader and the new deputy leader for parliamentary affairs, Labour would be in an excellent position to be given by the majority of voters that which it should have been given on 8 March - the responsibility to govern our country.
