What Is still happening to Dwejra?

Malta Independent Sunday, 30 March 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 17 years ago

The Mayor of San Lawrenz has first and foremost the subjects of his kingdom at heart – or so he wrote in recent letters. How nice.

I wonder if he has actually seen the new monstrosity that has suddenly appeared in his kingdom. I was there a couple of days ago and after my initial reaction of absolute horror I thought that perhaps the council of San Lawrenz was building a 4x4 showroom there (the road is a wonderful introduction to how practical it would be to have a 4x4). A tourist behind me mentioned something about “a funny place for keeping elephants...”

No, no this is going to be an interpretative (what on earth is that?) centre and a cafeteria. I would say that Dwejra needs a cafeteria like it needs more sewage in the Inland Sea and assuming that “interpretative” means “information”. I was under the impression that there already is an information centre at the beautifully renovated fort! This is meant to be a World Heritage site for goodness sake not a fast-food outlet! Next thing the “sanctioned” boathouses will be turned into mini discos, bordellos or other dubious whatnots!

I appreciate and commend the fact that Mepa is apparently trying to put a stop to such blatant abuse of permits, but is there no control? This recent construction is so appalling and so obvious that I find it hard to believe that nobody “saw” it happening....

What will happen to it? I can only hope that it will be dismantled and removed forthwith and that it will not land up at the bottom of the Inland Sea, which would be a very convenient, cheap, dumping zone!

When are the inhabitants of this wonderful group of islands going to start caring for them, seriously? Who are the people that carry out such atrocities? My heart bleeds for the next generation, but the one after that is probably doomed!
