Mavin Khoo Togive workshops

Malta Independent Saturday, 12 April 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Anyone who turns down a contract with Circ Du Soleil after being head-hunted by them must seriously have a mission to fulfil, and that is just what Mavin Khoo, Classical Indian and Ballet dancer, choreographer and teacher has. Each man’s journey is personal and here is a man who “runs his own race”, who fearlessly reaches unexplored territory and who triumphs in doing so. Mavin studied Classical Ballet and merged the Indian Classical dance, Bharatnatyam, for a western audience, never deviating from the authenticity of the classical line and composure. Yet a storm lurks in his art, a quiet storm that breaks with tradition and brings an ancient art into the now.

Alegria Academia are indeed fortunate to welcome Mavin Khoo once again to Malta as he returns to impart his knowledge in Ballet, Contemporary and Indian Classical Dance. His easy manner and perfectly natural people skills charm the student and make learning from him a completely delightful experience. His wisdom and insight into dance and how it relates to the immediate world is conveyed generously and one that time spent with Mavin is powerful time well spent.

Bharatnatyam is an ancient Classical Indian Dance form that uses the narrative mime with highly evolved, intricate technique that will enthral the drama student. Evidence of the root of Flamenco is also found in Indian Classical Dance, adding an invaluable exploration and understanding of Flamenco itself. This all, coupled with Classical Ballet and Contemporary Dance, adds a new dimension, dynamic and exciting as it unleashes the unique artist within.

Intensive workshops for practitioners of theatre with Mavin Khoo will be held today and tomorrow at ActionBase Studios in Naxxar. A performance by Mavin Khoo will be held tomorrow at 8.30pm while further workshops for dancers will be held from Monday 14 April to Friday 18 April between 7.30pm – 9pm.
