Malta Independent Tuesday, 13 May 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 17 years ago

All over the world, the Olympic Day Run is a great moment of sport, solidarity and celebration, which thousands of people look forward to.

This year once again, on the five continents, men and women, children and older people, athletes, will be celebrating in their own way the creation of the IOC and the birth of the modern Olympic Games by taking part in a unique event which is more than just a run.

An ideal platform for highlighting the benefits of physical activity and its contribution to general wellbeing, this event also focuses on the values of sport, their meaning and the reasons for their importance in today’s world.

Again we are teaming up with McDonald’s and the MAAA’s to organise this Run and this will take place on 22 June (Sunday) starting in Bugibba from McDonald’s Restaurant located on Islet Promenade. Participation is free of charge.

Official Olympic Day Run T-shirts and caps will be given to all participants including an official Olympic Day Run IOC Certificate signed by the President of the IOC Dr Jacques Rogge.

Applications will be readily available at any McDonald’s restaurants and through the offices of the MOC (and our website www.nocmalta.org).

Registration is also accepted on the day of the run at 7.30am. Three running distances will be held the 2.5K, the 5K and the 10K. Participants can even cycle the 10K should they wish.

Organisations are encouraged to form a team and come along and join us. Souvenir plaques will be given out for those groups that bring along the largest numbers in the following categories: Largest School Group, Largest Running Club Group, Largest Sport Entity/Organisation Group and Largest Company Group. For recipients of these prizes a group application form must be completed and handed in before the run.

A team representative should be nominated to receive prize on the day and clearly marked on the application form.

This event is also supported by the following associations: Malta Amateur Athletics Association who are assisting the MOC in organising this event and the Malta Cycling Federation will also be encouraging their cyclists to do the 10K route ahead of the runners.

More than just a run

(Message of the President of the International Olympic Committee)

All over the world, the Olympic Day Run is a great moment of sport, solidarity and celebration, which thousands of people look forward to.

Every year, on the five continents, men and women, children and seniors, athletes of all ages and from different sports, celebrate in their own way the creation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the birth of the modern Olympic Games by taking part in an event that is more than just a run.

It is a unique opportunity to share Pierre de Coubertin’s vision, promote the development of those physical and moral qualities that are the basis of sport, use sport to educate young people in a spirit of better understanding between each other and spread the Olympic values of friendship, excellence and respect throughout the world, thereby creating international goodwill.

In the organisation of this important event, the IOC is accompanied by its partners. We are grateful for the commitment and enthusiasm of our worldwide Olympic partner, McDonald’s, which has been supporting the National Olympic Committees in making this Run a success during the last six years.

More than ever, sport has to be a social movement that can offer to all the generations, but young people in particular, the chance to lead not just a healthier, more balanced life, but a more meaningful one. The Olympic Day Run is an excellent way of achieving this.

Thank you for your commitment to sport.

A Happy Olympic Day!

Jacques ROGGE

IOC President
