Malta Labour Party International Secretary Joe Mifsud officially launched his campaign for the party affairs deputy leader post.

Dr Mifsud’s intentions to contest were reported in The Malta Independent last week.

In a press conference held yesterday, Dr Mifsud explained that unity and outreach were at the forefront of his message to the party delegates. He decided to contest the position after being active within the MLP for 22 years and stated that he had always been loyal to the party and its leaders and never washed dirty linen in public.

Dr Mifsud said he would be meeting each and every delegate in order to explain his plans for the party’s future, which include over 50 proposals.

Among them, Dr Mifsud said he would seek to increase the party membership by five per cent, and establish a directorate for communication which would coordinate the party media.

Dr Mifsud proposed to establish a number of fora, related to internal affairs, local government, workers and self-employed and national policy.

Party candidates should be asked to visit at least 2,000 households and present the party with a report which would help it establish better policies for the people. Financial planning would be central to his administration, he said, as he would seek commercial activities with private entities similar to those entertained by the British Labour Party.

Dr Mifsud said he would seek to attract more young people and women as candidates for the party.
