WasteServ Extends its support to EkoSkola

Malta Independent Friday, 30 May 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

WasteServ Malta Ltd has extended its support to the environmental education project EkoSkola for this year, with a contribution of e3,200. The funds will help Nature Trust (Malta), which manages the project as the representative of FEE (Foundation for Environmental Edu-cation), to cover FEE membership for the year.

The project runs in over 50 countries world-wide. In Malta, since it kicked off in 2002, EkoSkola has grown from six primary schools to 73 schools. Four schools have so far achieved Green Flag status – an international award given to those who meet the rigid criteria of environmental management. Another four schools have obtained the Silver Award and three have received the Bronze Award.

EkoSkola locally adopts an overall management strategy characterised by monitoring the progress in each participating school, offering support to participating schools and teachers, promoting the programme with new schools, designing educational materials, taking initiatives to attract funding and support for the programme and empowering children to take decisions and initiatives.

Vincent Attard, President, Nature Trust (Malta) said: “WasteServ’s support will help NTM as FEE’s Malta Office to keep up the educational programmes of EkoSkola and Young Reporters for the Environment by footing our membership obligations to FEE International.

“Our partnership with WasteServ is ideal considering the tremendous work Wasteserv has been doing to raise awareness on issues of waste, which is also one of the main topics covered by FEE in most of its eco label programmes.”

“We believe very much in collaborating with NGOs and other entities that can help us raise awareness on waste issues,” said Vince Magri, Chief Executive Officer, WasteServ Malta Ltd.

Mr Magri added, “EkoSkola was a success story from its initial stages, and we are extending our support to help the programme reach its targets and increase its schools, awards, initiatives, media campaigns and school exchanges.”

Also present during the presentation that was held at Siggiewi Primary School C was the recently-appointed WasteServ Chairman Perit Ben Farrugia, who congratulated EkoSkola for their work and stated that the existing relationship between EkoSkola and WasteServ should be fostered for the benefit of the education of Maltese children.
