Labour MP Presents report on election irregularities to police

Malta Independent Wednesday, 11 June 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

MLP Justice Spokesman Anglu Farrugia said he presented the Commissioner of Police with a second report on alleged irregularities committed by the Nationalist Party during the election campaign and will alert the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) about it.

Dr Farrugia, who is running for the party’s deputy leadership post (parliamentary affairs), addressed a press conference yesterday on the steps of the Court of Justice.

He revealed how he presented a second report on alleged irregularities committed by the PN to Police Commissioner John Rizzo and is currently drafting a third one.

Dr Farrugia, who was an OSCE observer for the 2004 USA presidential election, said he has over 50 photographs of ballots marked by people who were made to vote PN. He claimed that these people were given mobile phones to take photos as evidence of their voting preference.

The Mosta lawyer claimed people were threatened to vote PN. The reports contain a statement by a person claiming he was threatened with his job if he did not vote PN.

Dr Farrugia added that the government had tampered with the point-awarding system in the allotting of government housing in Cospicua in order to allot over 200 units.

He stated that he had already spoken to OSCE observers and claimed that there was enough evidence to present the reports to the organisation of which Malta has been member since 1973.

Asked whether the Maltese elections were monitored by the organisation, Dr Farrugia said it is up to the government to invite OSCE observers to monitor the electoral process.

He declared that he has the backing of the MLP on this issue.

Dr Farrugia decried a number of transfers within the Courts of Justice, which he held were politically motivated and took place immediately following the 8 March election.
