AD’s Reaction to Irish Referendum results

Malta Independent Sunday, 15 June 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Alternattiva Demokratika said in a statement that it respects the will of the Irish people, who have rejected the Lisbon Treaty in a national referendum. However, it said, it is a great pity that the Charter of Fundamental rights has been rejected. This will be a great loss for all EU citizens.

Alternattiva Demokratika believes that the right way of approving this Treaty would have been a Europe-wide referendum requiring a double majority of states and peoples, as was suggested by the European Greens years ago.

While the Lisbon Treaty is now dead, Alternattiva Demokratika predicts that in the next few months a mini intergovernmental conference will be convened by the 27 member states in order to approve the necessary institutional changes required for the better functioning of the European Institutions, such as Parliament and the Commission, ahead of the June 2009 European Parliament elections.
