Yacht Marinas privatisation: Labour Party complains about lack of consultation

Malta Independent Thursday, 24 July 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 17 years ago

The Malta Labour Party yesterday accused the government of once again taking a decision, this time on the privatisation of yacht marinas, without consultation in Parliament.

In a joint statement, Labour spokesperson for public investments Helena Dalli and spokesperson for Transport Joe Mizzi pointed out that the government could have easily announced the privatisation of the marinas in Parliament, which adjourned last week.

However, they said, the government waited for Parliament to adjourn and announced its decision to privatise through a press release.

As a result, the Labour Party has to resort to using the media to ask the questions which should have been asked in Parliament.

The two Labour MPs queried why the government allowed the marinas to fall into the present state of abandon when it had privatisation in mind and asked if any studies were carried out.

They also asked if any form of consultation was held before the decision was taken and with whom.

Furthermore, they added, will the privatisation include the marina’s assets or will it be limited to management. “How will this decision affect the workers’ rights and those who make use of the marina’s services?”
